Is the Healing Field Calling You?

Why the Healing Field Is Not for Everyone

The idea of becoming a healer: guiding others through pain, facilitating transformation, and holding space for growth, is deeply alluring. For many, it evokes images of soulful sessions, serene spaces, and making a living doing something meaningful. But the reality of walking the healer’s path, especially as a business owner, is far from a romantic dream. It's a serious calling, one that requires more than compassion, it demands discipline, stamina, business acumen, and unshakable inner strength.

The healing arts are flooded with people who arrive with heart, intuition, and a longing to serve, but leave just a few years later, burnt out and financially drained.

Let’s get clear: healing is work. Deep, vulnerable, emotionally heavy work. You hold space for trauma, grief, and fear. You meet people where they are, even when it’s dark. And often, you do this while battling your own doubts, financial uncertainty, and a saturated market.

There’s beauty in this path, yes, but it comes with weight.

Why the Healing Path Should Not Be Romanticized

Too many enter the field because they "feel called" - and while the call is sacred, it's not enough. Here’s what people often don’t talk about:

  • You will hold space for others’ trauma, even when your own wounds are fresh.

  • Clients may project, resist, cancel, or ghost you after powerful work.

  • You may struggle with charging your worth and setting boundaries.

  • Marketing can feel like “selling your soul” if you haven’t aligned it with your values.

  • You’ll often work alone, managing everything from emotional labor to social media content.

Many healers are deeply sensitive, and while this is a gift in session, it can be a burden in business.

Let’s Talk Numbers: The Hard Truth About Healing Businesses

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, around 20% of small businesses fail in the first year, and 50% fail within five years. The holistic wellness field is even trickier, as it's less regulated, highly competitive, and often misunderstood by the mainstream.

In 2023, IBISWorld reported that the alternative healthcare sector in the U.S. generated about $23 billion, but with over 160,000 businesses competing in that space. That includes massage therapists, Reiki practitioners, hypnotherapists, energy workers, and holistic coaches.

The average solo practitioner earns between $25,000 to $60,000 annually, with only a small percentage earning six figures or more. The ones who succeed are often the ones who treat their work as a business first, healing second - income becomes truly limitless for these people.

It Takes a Special Mindset (and an Iron Will)

To thrive in the healing field and succeed in building a sustainable business around it, you need more than empathy or a "calling." You need stamina, structure, and strategy, especially if you're planning to be self-employed.

Most people simply don’t have what it takes to run their own business long-term. In fact, according to psychological research and entrepreneurial studies, only about 4% of the population is truly wired for successful long-term self-employment.

It’s a cold reality.

Most people are better suited to structured environments with external accountability, consistent income, and a clear division of roles. Entrepreneurs (and especially healing entrepreneurs) must wear every hat - CEO, marketer, administrator, content creator, healer, and accountant.

To thrive in this field, you must be able to:

  • Keep going when no one is booking.

  • Promote yourself without cringing.

  • Create systems and automations, even if you're not tech-savvy.

  • Hold space for someone’s rage, grief, or confusion without taking it personally.

  • Continually invest in your own training, healing, and mindset.

  • Say 'no' to draining people or toxic energy, no matter how much they offer to pay.

You’ll have to build your own momentum from the inside out, day after day, with no boss to tell you what to do, and no guarantee of reward unless you do it.

In other words: you need emotional resilience, strategic thinking, and unshakeable inner clarity.

If that sounds intense - it is. But for those rare few who are built for it, it’s a path that offers freedom, impact, and deeply meaningful work.

Final Words

The healing field is sacred, but sacred doesn’t mean easy. If you’re drawn to this work, don’t walk in blindly. Study the market. Prepare for the emotional and logistical realities. Build strong inner scaffolding.

But here’s the truth: the real question isn’t whether you can do this… it’s whether you can live without it.

If you can live without it - no judgment at all. In fact, that means you’re likely a healthy, well-adjusted person who will have no trouble fitting into society. That’s a gift. A big one.

But for some of us… there is no other option.
